Yashasvi Jaiswal has developed into the epitome of confidence and a strong batting style since his Under-19 years. He has also managed to add consistency, as evidenced by his performance in the IPL and domestic cricket for Mumbai in the early 2020s.
Jaiswal relocated to Mumbai at the age of 12 to play cricket. He sold pani puris to make pocket money as he slept in tents. After observing him at Azad Maidan two years later, a local coach named Jwala Singh took him under his wing, and Jaiswal's career started to soar.
Jaiswal amassed scores of 113, 22, 122, 203, and 60 not out in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a domestic 50-overs competition, in October 2019. His run was only broken when rain eliminated Mumbai from the competition. He served as India's primary batsman at the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa the following year, where he was named Player of the Tournament and the team came in second. This opened the door for a lucrative contract with the IPL's Rajasthan Royals, who bought him for Rs 2.4 crore (about US$ 338,000).
The step up from tearing apart domestic bowlers and lording it over U-19 attacks wasn't quite smooth, but hard work and long hours spent working on his technique and skills at the Royals academy when training opened up after Covid helped his confidence, Jaiswal said. In his first full Ranji Trophy season, 2021-22, he made three successive hundreds in Mumbai's run to the final.
At Royals, where he was retained ahead of the 2022 season, Jaiswal has formed a fearsome opening combination with Jos Buttler. In the 2023 IPL, he set a new record for the fastest fifty in the tournament's history, off just 13 balls.
